Welcome to The Cozy Chapter’s “Is It Worth the Hype?” series, where I finally sit down and give you my honest take on the most talked-about books and series taking over BookTok, Bookstagram, and basically every group chat I’m in. You know the ones. Let’s dive into the mega-hyped romantasy and fantasy series and answer the ultimate question: Did they live up to the hype… or not so much?
🐉 Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
⭐️ My Rating: 5/5 📖 Genre: Romantasy | Dragons | War College | Enemies to Lovers🔥 Spice: Medium to High
Is it worth the hype? Yes. A million times yes. This book gave me everything, high stakes, secret powers, forbidden romance, and DRAGONS?! I was hooked from the first chapter. Violet is a relatable, underestimated MC, and don’t even get me started on Xaden. The pacing was perfect, and I didn’t want it to end.
Verdict: Absolutely worth it, believe the hype and then some. 🐲🔥
⭐️ My Rating: 5/5 📖 Genre: YA Fantasy | Magic School | Found Family🔥 Spice: None
Is it worth the hype? Yes, and it always will be. I grew up with this series, so it’s foundational for my love of books. There’s so much magic, friendship, and imagination built into every page. It may not hit the same if you’re just now picking it up, but for me, it’ll always be a comfort read.
Verdict: Forever iconic. 🪄✨
⭐️ My Rating: 5/5 📖 Genre: Romantasy | Fae | Found Family | Slow Burn🔥 Spice: Starts slow, gets very spicy by Book 2
Is it worth the hype? YES. While Book 1 didn’t blow me away, Book 2 (A Court of Mist and Fury) completely changed the game. The emotional depth, the healing arc, the romantic tension, it all landed so hard. Rhysand is one of my forever book boyfriends. This series gave me all the feels.
Verdict: Worth every page. Push through Book 1, you won’t regret it. 🖤🌙
⭐️ My Rating: 3/5 📖 Genre: Urban Fantasy | Mystery | Angels & Magic🔥 Spice: Mild
Is it worth the hype? This one… didn’t fully work for me. It’s dense, and I struggled to connect with the characters. The world building is cool, and the last few chapters of Book 1 were intense, but overall it felt like a bit of a slog. I wanted to love it more than I actually did.
Verdict: Only worth it if you’re deep in your high fantasy era. 📘💫
⭐️ My Rating: 4.5/5 📖 Genre: Contemporary Romance | Secret Society | Angsty & Chaotic🔥 Spice: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Is it worth the hype? It’s messy. It’s emotional. It’s spicy. And I LOVED it. I cried, I screamed, I highlighted so many quotes. It’s not your traditional romance, and it’s definitely not for everyone, but it gave me a major book hangover. I still think about it more than I should.
Verdict: A hot mess, but in the best possible way. 🛻🖤
⭐️ My Rating: 4.5/5 📖 Genre: Dark Academia | Fae | Twin Sisters | Bully Romance🔥 Spice: 🔥🔥 (increases with each book)
Is it worth the hype? Once I got past the first book, I was hooked. It’s dramatic, dark, ridiculous, and addictive. The romance is frustrating in all the best ways, and the plot twists had me gasping. There are definitely problematic elements, but it knows what it is: chaotic fun.
Verdict: If you’re down for the drama, this will own you. ⚔️🪐
💬 Final Thoughts
Hyped books can be hit or miss, but when they hit, they hit hard. Whether it’s dragons, fae, dark secrets, or morally gray chaos, each of these series has a reason people can’t stop talking about them. Some lived up to the hype for me. Others… not quite.
But that’s the beauty of reading, it’s personal.
