🌶️ Is Spice Necessary in a Romance Book? Let’s Talk About It.

Spice. Steam. Heat. Whatever you call it, “spicy” scenes in romance books are a hot topic (pun intended). Some readers won’t touch a book unless it has a certain level of spice, while others prefer their love stories with nothing more than longing glances and maybe a kiss or two. So let’s dig into the question: Is spice necessary in a romance book?

Spoiler alert: The answer isn't as simple as yes or no.

💬 First, What Is Spice?

In the book world, “spice” usually refers to the level of intimacy depicted on the page, anything from open-door love scenes to explicit, detailed encounters. It’s a spectrum, and different readers fall in love with different levels of heat.

Think of spice like seasoning in a dish:

  • Some people want just a pinch.

  • Some want it medium.

  • Others want it flaming hot.

And all of them are valid.

❤️ Romance Without Spice

Clean or closed-door romance is beloved for a reason. These stories focus on emotional connection, tension, and character growth without going into graphic detail. Books like these can still deliver butterflies, tears, and that breathless "they finally kissed!" moment.

When spice isn't necessary:

  • In sweet small-town romances

  • YA or new adult genres

  • When emotional intimacy takes center stage

  • For readers who just aren’t comfortable with explicit content

Sometimes, the slow burn and longing make the payoff even more satisfying—even if it all happens off-page.

🔥 Romance With Spice

Spicy romance has exploded in popularity, especially thanks to BookTok and Bookstagram. These books tend to lean into tension, chemistry, and vulnerability in ways that feel raw and real. For many readers, spice is a key part of character development and relationship-building.

When spice adds value:

  • To show emotional progression between characters

  • To explore intimacy, healing, or trust

  • To enhance the tension or stakes in the plot

  • When it’s consistent with the tone of the book

That said, spice for the sake of spice can feel… flat. If there’s no emotional weight behind it, it often feels like filler.

🧠 So… Does It Have to Be There?

Not at all. Spice should enhance the romance, not replace it. A well-written love story can be deeply satisfying whether it's sizzling hot or entirely sweet.

The real heart of romance?

  • The tension

  • The stakes

  • The characters

  • The connection

If those are done right, spice becomes an optional extra, not a requirement.

📚 My Take as a Romance Reader

Personally? I love a bit of spice, but only when it fits the story. I’ve read closed-door books that made me swoon harder than some of the steamiest ones. And I’ve read spicy books that felt empowering, emotional, and beautifully crafted.

What matters most to me is emotional chemistry, the kind that makes your chest ache, your stomach flip, and your heart root for the characters no matter what heat level they’re on.
