The Shepherd King Series Thoughts and Review

Hello Cozy fam, it's been a minute but we are back and coming in hot. The new year has been a wild one, so far I have read two AMAZING books the first one was Love Rekindled At The Bookstore by Sky Hudson (Look out for that book review coming soon). But what we are really here for is The Shepherd King Series by Rachel Gillig.

This series was everything and more. It had mystery, love, loss, and so much more. Each page I turned faster and faster each time I read. I legit could not but it down.

Now let's jump into what this series consists of....

Book 1: One Dark Window

As we all know some fantasy worlds just sparkle.

Others rot beautifully from inside out.

One Dark Window is a gothic fantasy steeped in mist, madness, and forbidden magic. It's eerie, romantic, and quietly unsettling in a way that lingers long after you close the book. (I was in a book slump for 3 weeks after).

Elspeth Spindler lives in the fog drenched kingdom of Blunder, where magic is both feared and hunted. In the world, power comes from Providence Cards (12 ancient cards that grant magic abilities... but ALWAYS demand a price. Elspeth carries a dangerous secret: she's infected with forbidden magic. Worse, she isn't alone inside her head. A powerful spirit known as the Nightmare has been living within her since childhood. When she's forced into an alliance with a rebellious highwayman captain on a mission to collect the Providence Cards and break the kingdom's curse, Elspeth is pulled into a deadly political game, And the closer they get to their goal, the more control the Nightmare begins to take.

Here's what I loved....

The Atmosphere. This book feels like walking through a cursed forest at twilight. The fog, the crumbling estates. the tension simmering under every interaction. It's immersive in a way that makes the setting feel alive.

The Magic System. The Providence Cards are one of the most creative fantasy devices I have read in a while. Each card offers specific power (truth, strength, illusion, ect) but the cost is physical and psychological deterioration. The system feels structured and mythic, almost like dark tarot lore.

The Nightmare. The real standout. The voice inside Elspeth's head is sharp, mysterious, and morally complex. The dynamic between them adds layers of tension and vulnerability that elevate the entire story.

The Romance. Slow burn. Guarded. Charger with unspoken emotion. The relationship builds naturally through shared danger and secrets making every moment feel earned.

One Dark Window is perfect for readers who love gothic fantasy vibes, morally gray characters, magic with consequences, slow burn ternsion, lush, lyrical writing.

It's haunting, intimate, and beautifully restrained, the kind if fantasy that whispers instead of shouts.

⭐ Rating: 5/5

Book 2: Two Twisted Crowns

If One Dark Window was a slow decent into darkness, Two Twisted Crowns is the moment you realize you've been falling all along.

The second and final installment in Gillig's duology raises the stakes, deepens the emotions arcs, and delivers a conclusion that feels both inevitable and devastating. This Sequel expands beyond Elspeth's single viewpoint. The narrative shift adds dimension to the story, especially as the quest to gather all 12 cards nears it's climax.

What once felt intimate becomes epic.

This book leans harder into themes of sacrifice, autonomy, and the cost of power. The emotional tension is sharper. The consequences feel heavier. And the character arcs.... particularly involving Nightmare, are handled with surprising tenderness. The romance evolves in a way the feels mature and earned. It's less about longing glances and more about trust, choices, and devotion under impossible circumstances.

You may asking what makes this book shine? Well in my opinion it is the strong character development, a satisfying payoff to the Providence Card mythology, the emotional depth that hits harder than expected, and a conclusion that feels complete.

Two Twisted Crowns doesn't just wrap up the story, it transforms it. The ending is bold, bittersweet, and thematically resonant. It's the kind of finale that makes you want to immediately reread the first book with new understanding.

Together these books create a dark fairytale duology that is atmospheric, romantic, and unforgettable.
