Because not every BookTok darling deserves five stars—and not every underrated gem should be ignored.

You know the ones: the books that everyone and their fictional boyfriend has been raving about. They’re all over Instagram, TikTok, and your Goodreads feed with screaming caps, annotated tabs, and “this ruined me” in the captions. But were they actually worth it?

In this post, I’m breaking down some of the most hyped romance standalones I finally picked up—along with my honest thoughts. Did they live up to the buzz? Did I finish them in one sitting or almost DNF? Let’s get into it.

📚 Reminder: These are just my opinions!

Reading is personal. What didn’t work for me might be your next 5-star fave—and vice versa! I’m spilling my thoughts with zero spoilers and full honesty.

💥 The Hype Meter:

Each book below is rated on a scale from “Not For Me” ➡️ “Overhyped But Fun” ➡️ “Believe the Hype” ➡️ “Obsessed—You Were All Right”

1. Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score

📖 Grumpy small town bad boy + runaway bride chaos.

💬 Hype Level: Insane. Everyone calls this their comfort read.

My Take: I loved the banter, the sister storyline, and the community vibe. It’s long, but I stayed invested. Some scenes were a little dramatic, but overall? I get the hype.

🔥 Hype Meter: Believe the Hype

2. Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

📖 Second-chance romance with cottage core summer nostalgia.

💬 Hype Level: “You’ll sob into your sunscreen.”

My Take: The writing is atmospheric, and the timeline flip kept me hooked. The ending twist? Predictable, but didn’t ruin the vibe. Summer heartbreak + healing? I’m in.

🔥 Hype Meter: Overhyped But Fun (but still recommend for summer)

3. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

📖 Fake dating between a PhD student and a grumpy STEM professor.

💬 Hype Level: BookTok blew this up.

My Take: Quirky, meme-worthy, and the perfect intro to the “STEMinist romance” wave. It’s predictable but adorable. Olive is awkward in the best way.

🔥 Hype Meter: Obsessed—You Were All Right

4. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

📖 Emotional, raw, and not your typical love triangle.

💬 Hype Level: Colleen Hoover’s most talked-about book.

My Take: Heavy. Important. More women’s fiction than romance. The love story is complicated—and it should be. Worth reading, but emotionally taxing.

🔥 Hype Meter: Believe the Hype (but check content warnings!)

5. Funny Feelings by Tarah DeWitt

📖 Stand-up comic and her grumpy single dad manager.

💬 Hype Level: Quietly hyped on BookTok but loyal fanbase.

My Take: Soft. Sweet. Surprisingly deep. The pacing is slower, but the payoff? So worth it. Great if you’re over high-drama plots.

🔥 Hype Meter: Obsessed—You Were All Right

6. Book Lovers by Emily Henry

📖 Enemies-to-lovers between a literary agent and an editor.

💬 Hype Level: Queen Emily Henry rarely misses.

My Take: It’s smart and emotionally layered. Nora isn’t your typical romance heroine—and I loved that. Felt like a Hallmark movie written by Taylor Swift.

🔥 Hype Meter: Obsessed—You Were All Right

7. Set on You by Amy Lea

📖 Body-positive fitness influencer falls for the gym grump.

💬 Hype Level: BookTok loved the rep.

My Take: Cute premise, solid rep, but some pacing issues. If you love a spicy enemies-to-lovers at the gym, this might be your thing. For me, it was just okay.

🔥 Hype Meter: Overhyped But Fun

8. Before We Were Strangers by Renée Carlino

📖 College sweethearts reunite after 15 years.

💬 Hype Level: Under-the-radar hype, but a cult favorite.

My Take: Bittersweet and beautifully written. I didn’t expect to feel so much. A quiet heartbreak read that sneaks up on you.

🔥 Hype Meter: Believe the Hype

9. Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan

📖 A mute recluse + a woman running from her past.

💬 Hype Level: One of the OG BookTok tearjerkers.

My Take: This book wrecked me. It’s a slower, more emotional romance, but Archer is one of the best soft boys in the genre.

🔥 Hype Meter: Obsessed—You Were All Right

10. The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams

📖 NFL player and his best friend fake date for PR.

💬 Hype Level: Sweet cinnamon roll status.

My Take: If you want low angst, high fluff, and squeal-worthy chemistry—this is it. It’s like watching a rom-com with snacks in hand.

🔥 Hype Meter: Believe the Hype

✨ Final Thoughts:

Some books will never live up to the hype—and that’s okay. But when one does? It’s magic. If you're overwhelmed by the trending reads, hopefully this post helps you find which ones are worth diving into.
